UN experts conclude visits to UK places of detention

Independent Monitoring Boards (IMBs) are part of the UK’s National Preventive Mechanism set up under the Optional Protocol to the UN Convention against Torture (Opcat).

The NPM was established in 2009 to strengthen the protection of people in detention through independent monitoring and focuses attention on practices in detention that could amount to ill-treatment;

The United Nations Sub Committee for the Prevention of Torture visited the UK during September and accompanied NPM members, including Heathrow IMB, on visit as well as undertaking their own. The NPM called for government action in response to the visit (PDF).
