Swaleside 2018/19 annual report published

The Independent Monitoring Board (IMB) for HMP Swaleside has today published its annual report for 2018/19

The Boards Chair, Bob Chapman, says,

‘Management and staff have shown immense dedication towards giving the prison direction and focus. Whilst we remain concerned that drugs, phones and weapons entering the prison are still helping to fuel violence, the initiatives put in place to curb the ingress of contraband and locate that which is already in the prison are very encouraging. There are still issues with staffing levels but once this is stabilised and the younger staff members gain more experience, we are confident about the future and the continued roll-out of the management vision of a caring and rehabilitative environment. Though Swaleside is not a resettlement prison, more can still be done to prepare residents for release. Some aspects, such as substance misuse, are being tackled well, but some, such as vocational training, are lagging behind.’
