Foston Hall is a closed Women's Prison, taking in remand and sentenced prisoners. Work and education opportunities are made available, including a sewing machinery workshop, painting and decorating work, a hairdressers, a cafe, recycling centre, large kitchen gardens and grounds of the old Hall building plus an animal sanctuary. A number of prisoners have complex problems and there are a range of specialist services to provide support. Many prisoners are on short term sentences.

HMP Oakwood is the largest prison in England, it is run by G4S so is a private prison and there are a great any prisoner led initiatives. There are over 2000 prisoners housed in 3 large houseblocks and 2 smaller ones. Prisoners have an age range from 21 to 91. HMP Drake Hall is situated in rural Staffordshire, about a mile from Eccleshall and 10 miles from Stafford. The prison is a training and resettlement prison and does not take remand prisoners. Although designated as a closed prison, the layout provides significant freedom of movement for prisoners within the perimeter fence. In this sense, the environment is unique within the women's closed estate. The emphasis is on the development of an ethos to ensure the women develop their potential to successfully leave prison and not reoffend.
